Web design should be the means of achieving increased website traffic rather than an end in itself, according to one expert.
Despite increased awareness of the importance of search engine optimisation (SEO) among businesses online, fundamental mistakes are still made about the purpose of a website, it has been claimed.
According to Kentwood online marketing expert Laura Bergells, web design is all too often a goal in itself without considering the need to reach the desired audience.
She told the Grand Rapids Press that businesses need to "resist the temptation to start with design".
"It's about spreading your message and letting people interact with it," she added.
The European Commission (EC) recently called on all web designers to make their website's more accessible to users with disabilities and has launched a consultation on the issue.
According to EC figures, around 15 per cent of Europeans have some form of disability that may impair their ability to use some sites.
