Social networking sites' ever-growing hold on the UK internet may be on the wane, but it looks unlikely to be the end of the internet marketing medium.
Recent figures from intellgence service company Hitwise, the average session time on the UK's most popular social networking site, Facebook is stuck at around 20 minutes.
Traffic on the site also grew by only four per cent through August, half the growth rate recorded in over the same period in 2007. Meanwhile, the overall UK market internet share for MySpace and Bebo has fallen.
But does this spell the beginning of the end for social networking online marketing?
That question of course remains unanswered in the careful analysis by Robin Goad on the Hitwise weblog. Sensibly, this concentrates on the facts of the matter rather than speculation.
However, it doesn't take a genius to spot that Facebook is still faring far better than many other UK websites, finding itself ranked second on the top ten most visited websites, with 3.16 per cent of the UK market share.
Unsurprisingly, the online marketing and internet giant Google tops the chart, garnering 8.22 per cent of the UK market share.
In the US meanwhile, Facebook is only the second-highest ranking social network website, with a 20.56 per cent share of the market.
