Ranking reports are no longer such a good measure of targeted website traffic.
This stance, from Mark Jackson of Search Engine Watch, may seem controversial, but search engine rankings for keywords are no longer what they once were.
Mr Jackson notes that these reports are not the best indicator for search engine optimisation (SEO), because some of a website's high ranking keywords may not be used very often by browsing internet users.
He observes: "Ranking reports don't mean nearly as much as they once did.
"Search engine rankings change regularly, are different on various data centres, and won't generate traffic to the web site, much less generate leads and sales."
Meanwhile, search engine marketing agency Latitude Group recently told bytestart.co.uk that many companies often make the mistake of selecting highly competitive keywords for their SEO.
This is likely to make it harder for start ups to get themselves up the rankings. As such, selected keywords should be realistic for each businesses projected performance.
