More and more people are buying their goods via their mobile, but businesses are missing out because of poor mobile web design, according to BT.
The telecoms giant polled 1,000 mobile phone users in the last three months and found that nearly half had used their phones to look for products, while one in five had actually made a purchase using their mobile.
"Broadband on the move is bringing about a change in consumer behaviour," the report said.
"The days of the internet being something for the home are over," it also claimed, although clearly BT was not factoring games like World of Warcraft and Everquest into its reckoning.
But businesses seemingly haven't jumped on this opportunity, which most not having specific mobile web design in use for their sites, despite many consumers wanting them.
"People want fit-for-purpose content that offers as sophisticated an experience on their handheld device as they're used to on their PC," the report said.
"Many businesses are in danger of being caught on the hop.
"Consumers' expectations may be outstripping the reality being offered by businesses."
But of course purchasing via mobile has the potential for almighty mistakes, not least predictive text resulting in a 'car' not a 'cap' being bought.
So, despite BT's poll, is the world really heading towards mobile purchasing?
