An estimated £208 million per year is spent on government websites in the UK, but could be in need of search engine optimization (SEO) services.

Authorities also estimate that there could be as many as 2,500 separate websites, although many departments were unable to provide details about how many people use them.

Moreover, one quarter of government organisations could not provide details of their costs, according to the commons committee of public accounts.

Director of public sector online services firm Ezgov, James Walker, explains that government websites need to be more coherent.

He said: "More coherent online information and functionality would not only decrease the time and effort involved with finding, printing and posting multiple forms for the citizen, but would also increase effectiveness and reduce costs."

The committee also noted that internal search functions, allowing users to access information across all government websites, was non-existent.
