Businesses which want to improve their search engine placement should focus on one main thing: content.
That's the view of Mark Jackson, writing on Search Engine Watch, who believes that for all the possible tricks involved in SEO web design, the one sure-fire way of achieving long-lasting results is good content.
In his column he mainly refers to textual content, and uses Wikipedia as an example as nearly every Google search features a Wikipedia entry in its top search results.
"This is the perfect search experience," he writes, "search for a keyword and get a result for a web page that's specific to what you searched for."
Continuing, he says that "theming" the content is also vital, as having one page of content to support the most important keyword is not enough, instead search engines must believe the website is an authority for the keyword, requiring the site to be a "treasure-trove" of content.
However, Wikipedia has the advantage of having numerous people adding to its content every day, and whenever just about any event happens.
So is it useful to hold up Wikipedia as an example of how to score a higher search engine ranking?
