The next step in strategic internet marketing may mean that people who make a cup of tea during television adverts and frantically click away from online marketing campaigns won't be able to escape any longer - the ads will follow them wherever they go.
Smartphones, reckons Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, "could represent the most important advertising platform we have ever known" - yes, even more important than the Coronation Street slot - and he says companies are already looking at mobile ads.
He's just come back from Digital Hollywood's Building Blocks 2008 conference, which he mostly spent at sessions on mobile phone advertising.
And he thinks the devices will create a new type of contextual advertising by using GPS - the technology where phones can find their location on the planet and relay this info to you, your phone company, your phone company's parent company and their best friends.
He gives an example: your GPS is tied to your music collection and calendar, it knows you have two Social Distortion albums, that you are in San Francisco and that you are not busy on Saturday night so Ticketmaster can alert you that the band are playing that night.
The question is: who on Earth are Social Distortion?
But also, that implies that Ticketmaster are going to know an awful lot about you - is this kind of strategic internet marketing a step towards Big Brother or is it just a case of don't sign up if you don't want it?
