Online TV to welcome new era of internet marketing

Online TV expansion could see increasing amounts of marketing revenue leap from television to the internet, according to Screen Digest.

The online marketing potential for television is growing, with more and more people opting to catch their favourite programs on their computer rather than their television.

ITV.com saw a 362 per cent increase in video usage during the first five months of 2008, while BBC iPlayer received 21 million requests for clips and shows in April alone.

Arash Amel, head of broadband media at Screen Digest, believes that significant changes in the online marketing format for television are set to take hold over the next few years.

He said: "The internet, at the moment, can't offer the same number of eyeballs as the television can.

"But it's not going to always stay like that, and in the next four or five years you'll see quite significant improvements in how much simultaneous video traffic the internet can deliver and cope with.

"That's when you're going to start seeing some sort of real competition between the platforms."

Meanwhile, Google and Yahoo recently announced that they are set to introduce Flash search capabilities into their engines that will rank video content.

This could see more and more website's offering video content to boost revenues with online marketing and their own search engine optimisation.
