Seeing that your website traffic is increased may not be the best way to increase your revenue - just ask Yahoo.
Despite Yahoo being the most popular destination on the web, it makes a tenth the profit of Google, so why is this?
Gerry McGovern, a content management author and consultant, reckons this is because Yahoo is too close to its products and too far from its customers.
While Yahoo has far more "page impressions" (distinct from "hits" or "visitors" in that it counts every time a user downloads a page) than Google, both companies make their money through advertising, and "Google's ads are more useful", believes Mr McGovern.
"Google is successful because it puts ads only where they will be useful to customers," he continues, basing his argument on the fact that on the web, it's the customer that's in control, not the company.
However, he cites the fact that "web teams are among the most isolated groups within organisations", and because they lack interaction with customers they cannot take that onboard when thinking about web design.
So should businesses allow their web design teams to have more interaction with customers, or should this always be left to the "customer service" section of the company?
