The use of social media can make even the most boring of products interesting, according to an internet marketing consultant.
Brent Csutoras writes on Search Engine Land that "there is really no product, service, or topic that cannot be successful in social media marketing if you are willing to be creative" - and lists a few to prove the point.
Perhaps the best is "Will it Blend", which managed to make the thoroughly boring industry of blenders interesting.
Blendtec put some of their products through extreme tests to find out their quality and durability and one employee was so impressed that he videoed a few and stuck them on the internet.
After that a "Will it Blend" website started up which tested all sorts of objects from coke cans to iPhones - and yes, both do blend.
The company reported that it "felt an impact in sales" - presumably in the "teenagers who like to destroy things" demographic.
Of course eventually they will run out of things to put in as they only film successful blends - this is internet marketing and not pure entertainment, after all.
So can campaigns like this work in the long-term or are they certain to just fizzle out?
